As the saying goes, "the wise man has no fear." But I’m not sure if that’s true. The landlord, who had never broken a phone screen before, finally experienced his first cracked screen—this time it was for a young person's phone. He took off his coat and put it in his pocket. The Xiaomi Mix fell, flipped, and landed on the cold concrete floor. Looking down, it was really broken.
No way! The Mix hadn’t even been scratched on the steel film. Before that, I had been bragging about how strong the Xiaomi Mix screen was. A year ago, there were no scratches, and I didn’t even like collecting fingerprints.
Fortunately, I had bought a one-year accident insurance for 249 yuan. I contacted Xiaomi customer service and sent it in for repair. But here’s the catch: the landlord only had one phone? Wait, the S7E was still being used by my mom, and the IPX was still unopened at home (the landlord is black and doesn’t use Apple), which led to an embarrassing situation. About seven days later, the landlord was busy (pretending), and not having a phone was very uncomfortable, so he didn’t send it in. I thought the 15-day deadline had passed, but then I saw a message:
"1299 RMB, historical low price? And it comes with a Xiaomi plug, phone card, and original foil. I’ve always wanted to buy a MAX, but I hesitated. Buy, buy, buy."
**Reasons to Purchase**
The landlord was moving further away from the road where pseudo-flour turned into rice flour. In fact, I've always liked large-screen phones because I read every day. A bigger screen means more words displayed (remembering the KO under my pillow).
When the Xiaomi MIX was first released on May 10, 2016, I really wanted to get one. However, the S7E was still new. The appearance wasn't bad, and compared to my taste, it was still in the honeymoon phase. No need to upgrade, so I held back. Later, when the Xiaomi MIX was released on November 4, 2016, it was amazing. The full-screen design blew me away, even surpassing the S7E. The curved screen looked cool, but you couldn't grab it!
After that, I finally rushed to buy one. I felt the big screen was comfortable and silky. Although the color wasn't as good as Samsung, the S7E was now outdated. It was pushed into the cold.
Because I liked the MIX1, I followed the news of MIX2 closely, but after its official release, I found it wasn't as good-looking as MIX1. The screen was smaller, and when I went to the store to test it, the feel was not as smooth as the original. I wasn't ready to change. After all, for me, the main function of a phone is reading books and shopping apps. Performance isn't that important. As long as the screen is big enough and the colors are decent, that's enough. Memory and storage? Not important. How big can a multi-million-word TXT file be?
A year later, on May 25, 2017, the Xiaomi MAX2 was released. I didn’t pay much attention. After all, I was still using the MIX. When I suddenly needed a new phone a few days ago, I found out there were actually two models available, and I didn’t do any research. I just went straight to the beginning.

When I wrote this article, I thought seriously about what factors I consider when buying a phone. As a former Samsung fan, from the T108 flagship all the way to the S7E, I switched to Xiaomi. Now, the “price†isn’t important, nor is the “flagship†status. The configuration or score doesn’t matter either. After all, it's used for browsing the web, reading novels, and answering calls. It just needs to be comfortable, have a big screen, and the system software shouldn’t be too complicated.
Switching from Samsung to Xiaomi was also due to the great native UI. This purchase of the MAX is another step on the path of rice flour.

They sent a tempered film. I still prefer tempered glass, except for some curved phones that are hard to fit. For most phones, a tempered film is better. From past experience, it can prevent a broken screen.
They also sent a SIM card, but since I already had one, I haven’t tested it yet. I guess few people still have only one phone number these days.
Opening the box, I saw the Xiaomi MAX body. The white border around the screen wasn’t too small. The natural protective film on the screen is essential, but I never agreed with the slogan “born for fever.†In fact, Xiaomi products are more about “value for money†than “fever.†I understand that “fever†refers to products made with the best materials and craftsmanship, top-tier in their category, regardless of price or cost-effectiveness.
To say “fever,†there’s only one model: the MIX1 when it was first released.
Of course, the slogan must be shouted, and the ideal is good. I hope Xiaomi will bring us some “fever-grade†products in the future.

Then I removed the charger and power cable. The Xiaomi MAX uses the same Type-C interface as the MIX.
Compared to the MIX1 size, the MIX1 used the original leather case, which looked like a big circle. The original leather case was really good, with good shock absorption. I dropped it on the concrete floor several times, and only the corner got scratched. It never broke. Maybe it was my luck. But it finally broke right at the end of the insurance period, and I felt it was worth it.

In my opinion, the Xiaomi MAX2 is essentially a lower version of the MIX1.
However, there are differences in usage. The MIX uses virtual buttons, while the MAX2 uses physical ones. So, the MAX2 may require a larger thumb span. After using the MIX, I switched to a finger, but the physical buttons reduce nail-to-screen friction significantly.
Both have similar weight, but due to size, the MIX feels much stronger. Since the landlord likes to read for long periods, and uses side keys to page, the MIX’s side keys are smoother and more suitable for long-term use, while the MAX2’s side keys are more prominent and cause more discomfort.
The biggest advantage of the MAX2 is its battery life, which is one of the best features of a standby machine. As for the MIX1, performance is somewhat outdated. WHO CARES?

**Follow-up & Summary:**
On December 27th, SF Express sent the broken MIX to Beijing. On the 31st, I received a text saying that EMS had sent it. On the 2nd, I received the phone. It looked like a big box. When I opened it, it was aggressive. Was this a new phone?
Not only did they replace it with a new phone (still sealed), but they also sent back the matching case from the old phone. Is this a gesture of care or a joke?
The new phone worked out of the box. There was no separate drying list here. After all, there are many orders for the Xiaomi MIX.
However, in my memory, when I called customer service, I just said I needed a screen replacement for the broken one. The customer service reminded me to back up the data, but I didn’t ask for a new one directly.
The landlord is a bit careless. I just took out the SIM card and didn’t back anything up or send it back. I thought replacing the screen would be enough. I didn’t think about the possibility of losing photos and documents stored for a long time. I shivered at the thought of reinstalling so many apps. But I didn’t worry. What else could I do?
So, here’s a lesson I learned:
1. If you buy a full-screen phone like Xiaomi MIX, Samsung S7E/S8E, or IPX, whether you think your hands are stable or not, if you have broken screen insurance, make sure to buy it. Once the screen breaks, replacing it costs at least 1000 RMB. The chance of breaking the screen is really high.
2. How to deal with Xiaomi's accident insurance? From what I've seen, there are different cases. Some get their screens fixed and sent back, others get a new machine. Whether it's a new one or an exchange, I'm not sure yet.
3. Just in case, if there are important data on your phone, back it up. Also, completely delete all data and software from the returned phone. (Additionally, someone said that Xiaomi technicians can help back up, but you can do it instantly and rest assured.)
4. Even if it's a new one, it takes about a week to return to the network. During this time, prepare for daily use. Like the landlord, I changed to another phone first.
5. After all, it's a sub-price product. Although the screen sizes of the Xiaomi MIX and MAX2 are almost the same, the feel, color performance, and response speed of the MIX are still superior. Of course, the MAX2 has excellent battery life. Even though the battery capacity is less than twice that of the MIX, under the same operation, its lifespan should be more than twice as long.
Therefore, if you like a large-screen phone with super battery life, the Xiaomi MAX2 is still a good choice at the thousand-yuan level.
