According to a report from French publication *Echo News* on December 18th, a fully automated forklift was seen in the R&D lab of JD.com, located in southern Beijing. Robots were efficiently lifting boxes and retrieving items from shelves, showcasing the company’s commitment to warehouse automation. As China’s second-largest e-commerce giant, JD.com has been heavily investing in robotic solutions, including small delivery robots and drones, to streamline its logistics operations. In September, JD.com launched its first fully automated warehouse near Shanghai, where machines and robots handle small goods unloaded from trucks. Earlier this month, the company’s logistics strategy head emphasized the growing challenges of hiring workers as e-commerce continues to expand. He noted that while the company needs to build millions of square meters of warehouses annually, finding enough porters and delivery personnel is becoming increasingly difficult. Despite JD.com's focus on automation, the use of robots in China remains relatively low, with only 49 industrial robots per 10,000 workers. However, the country is making rapid progress in industrial modernization. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently announced that China’s annual industrial robot output will surpass 100,000 units for the first time this year, with production reaching 120,000 in the first ten months alone. In 2016, the number stood at 72,000. Automation is a key component of China’s “Made in China 2025” initiative, aiming to transform the nation into a global industrial leader. One of the targets is to increase the number of robots per 10,000 workers to 150. While still behind South Korea (531) and the U.S. (176), China is now the world’s largest market for industrial robots, accounting for roughly one-third of global demand. In 2015, two-thirds of China’s robot demand was met by foreign manufacturers. However, domestic companies are gaining ground. JD.com’s subsidiary, Jingdong Hemei, is one example, while Midea’s acquisition of German robotics firm KUKA in 2016 marked a major shift in the industry. China also faces challenges such as a shrinking workforce and rising labor costs. Although automation is seen as the way forward, it will take time to fully realize the benefits. The transition to a more automated industry is underway, but it requires continued investment and innovation to maintain competitiveness in the global market.
