Today, tiny lamps smaller than sesame seeds are driving a new "lighting revolution." From outdoor electronic screens to car headlights and smartphone flashes, the development of photodiodes has made significant progress. Over 70% of LED application products worldwide are processed and manufactured in China. However, the lack of core technology has left high-end markets largely dominated by foreign companies. Jingneng Optoelectronics Co., Ltd.’s silicon substrate LED light sources have now changed this scenario.
Currently, we know of three types of substrates for LED production: sapphire, silicon carbide, and silicon. Although sapphire is widely used, silicon substrates offer not only cost-effectiveness but also enhance the reliability of lighting systems. The challenge lies in the extreme difficulty of mastering silicon substrate technology, which led many advanced countries to abandon this approach early on.
Starting in 2003, Professor Jiang Fengyi’s team at Nanchang University focused on silicon substrate LED technology. Through prolonged efforts and collaboration with Jingneng Optoelectronics, they successfully developed this technology and brought it to industrial levels.
Wang Min, CEO of Jingneng Optoelectronics, stated, “Our annual R&D investment is approximately 80 million to 100 million yuan, with research and development accounting for around 10% of our total projects. Without sufficient R&D funding, enterprise growth would be hindered.†With components as small as a hair’s breadth, Jingneng Optoelectronics holds over 130 patents, both domestically and internationally.
The energy consumption of LED lamps is merely one-tenth that of incandescent bulbs and half that of fluorescent lamps. Based on China's current lighting power usage, replacing traditional bulbs with LEDs could save up to 100 billion kWh annually.
China’s independently developed silicon substrate LED technology is considered the third major technical route in the global LED industry. This core competency has driven the rapid growth of Jingneng Optoelectronics and serves as a vivid example of China’s transition from “Made in China†to “Created in China.â€
The National 863 Expert Group evaluated this technology as follows: “By breaking the monopoly held by Japanese companies on sapphire substrates and American companies on silicon carbide-based semiconductor lighting technology, China has established a three-legged solution consisting of sapphire, silicon carbide, and silicon-based semiconductor lighting technologies.â€
Jiangxi province capitalized on its successful R&D and industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology. By supporting the entire industry chain, it transformed technological advantages into industrial strengths, transitioning from technological leadership to market dominance. As a result, Nanchang has become a national LED Valley.
In recent years, Jiangxi has introduced a series of policies aimed at deepening innovation-driven development, including “Implementation of the Innovation-Driven Development Strategy,†“Opinions on Implementing the Innovation-Driven ‘5511’ Project,†and “Provisions on Encouraging Researchers to Innovate and Start Businesses.†These policies provide strong top-level design support for technological innovation.
Meanwhile, Jiangxi has significantly increased its overall R&D investment. The province implemented the “Jiangxi Province Action Plan for Promoting the Transformation of Scientific and Technological Achievements,†increasing investments across all areas of research. In 2016, the province’s R&D expenditure rose to 20.73 billion yuan, nearly doubling the figure from 2012. Enterprise innovation became even stronger, with R&D investments reaching 18.135 billion yuan, a 93% increase compared to 2012.
