From outdoor electronic screens to car headlights and smartphone flashes, these applications are all part of the rapid advancement in photodiode technology. Although over 70% of LED products worldwide are processed and manufactured in China, core technology has long been monopolized by high-end foreign companies. However, this scenario is changing with the introduction of Jingneng Optoelectronics’ silicon substrate LED technology, which has now claimed its place in the high-end market. Currently, there are three primary methods for producing LED substrates: sapphire, silicon carbide, and silicon. While sapphire substrates dominate the market, silicon substrates offer several advantages such as affordability, ease of mass production, and enhanced reliability of the luminaire system. The difficulty in mastering silicon substrate technology led many developed nations to abandon the project early on. However, starting in 2003, Professor Jiang Fengyi's team at Nanchang University began focusing on silicon substrate LED technology. Through relentless efforts, they successfully developed the technology and collaborated with Jingneng Optoelectronics to achieve industrialization. Wang Min, CEO of Jingneng Optoelectronics, stated, “Our annual R&D investment is approximately 80 to 100 million yuan, with around 10% of our projects dedicated to research and development. Without sufficient R&D investment, enterprise growth would be significantly hindered.†With components as small as a hair's breadth, Jingneng Optoelectronics holds over 130 patents—both domestically and internationally. The energy efficiency of LED lamps is only one-tenth that of incandescent bulbs and half that of fluorescent lamps. If China were to replace traditional lighting with LEDs, it could save up to 100 billion kWh annually. The independently developed silicon substrate LED technology in China is considered the third major global LED industry route. This technology has become Jingneng Optoelectronics' core competitive advantage and serves as a remarkable example of China's transition from 'Made in China' to 'Created in China.' The National 863 Expert Group praised this breakthrough, stating, “By breaking the monopoly held by Japanese companies on sapphire substrates and U.S. companies on silicon carbide-based semiconductor lighting technology, China has established a three-legged solution comprising sapphire, silicon carbide, and silicon-based semiconductor lighting technologies.†Jiangxi Province capitalized on the success of R&D and industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology, fostering the entire industry chain. This initiative transformed technological advantages into industrial strengths, elevating Jiangxi to a national leader in LED lighting. Nanchang has emerged as the nation's premier LED valley. In recent years, Jiangxi has implemented various policies to encourage innovation, including the “Deep Implementation of the Innovation-Driven Development Strategy to Promote the Construction of Innovative Provinces,†the “Opinions on Implementing Jiangxi Province's Innovation-Driven ‘5511’ Project,†and the “Provisions on Encouraging Scientific Researchers to Innovate and Start Businesses.†These policies provide robust top-level support for technological advancements. Additionally, Jiangxi has significantly increased investments in R&D across society. Initiatives like the “Jiangxi Province Action Plan for Promoting the Transformation of Scientific and Technological Achievements†have driven substantial investments in research activities. In 2016, total R&D expenditures rose to 20.73 billion yuan, nearly doubling since 2012. Enterprise innovation has grown stronger, with R&D investments reaching 18.135 billion yuan, representing a 93% increase compared to 2012.
