According to a recent report from Japan’s Livedoor website on July 20th, Apple Inc. in the United States was granted a patent allowing users to discreetly send emergency assistance to the police via fingerprint authentication without realizing it. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has since published this innovative technology.
As per Apple's explanation, this feature enables users to initiate emergency calls for help when conventional methods of seeking assistance are unavailable. Even if the device screen is locked, individuals equipped with an iOS system can still make these urgent calls. Through this newly patented technology, users can seek help even when under duress or when an attacker is present.
Apple also detailed how this technology works, focusing on the specific sequence of fingerprint inputs and the pressure applied during the process. For instance, users would input their fingerprints in the order of the little finger, ring finger, and then the little finger again. The terminal program can recognize this sequence when an emergency request is triggered.
Currently, traditional methods of making an emergency call can often be detected by attackers. With this new technology, however, users can comply with the visual demands of an attacker to unlock their phone while simultaneously initiating a silent distress call.
It remains uncertain whether Apple plans to integrate this technology into future software updates. Implementing such features on mobile devices may require additional time and further patent approvals. Apple has yet to confirm its intentions regarding this matter.
