According to recent reports from overseas media, Mark Zuckerberg took the opportunity during a live stream over the weekend to criticize Elon Musk. “Artificial intelligence will enhance our lives for the better, so claiming it could lead to the end of the world is far too reckless,†he remarked. Zuckerberg described this portrayal of AI as an impending calamity as “highly irresponsible.â€
Attached is a screenshot from the live stream showing Zuckerberg confronting Musk.
Back in early July, Musk had voiced his concerns, stating that AI would likely cause widespread job losses as robots surpass humans in virtually every domain. He also shared his vision of a coexistence between humans and machines, suggesting that “the most advanced AI technologies represent the greatest threat to human civilization, and we must indeed be cautious.â€
In response to this, a viewer during the live stream posed a question to Zuckerberg: “Musk has mentioned that the primary concern for the future lies in AI. How do you perceive this issue, and what impact will this technology have on the world?â€
Zuckerberg responded by saying, “I believe those who harbor pessimistic attitudes toward AI or predict doom fail to fully grasp its potential. Their perspectives are overly negative and even irresponsible.†He further added, “Over the next five to ten years, AI will significantly improve our quality of life.â€
Elaborating on the advantages of AI, Zuckerberg provided examples like disease diagnosis and autonomous driving. “Accidents are one of the leading causes of fatalities, and AI has the potential to drastically reduce such tragedies.â€
However, Zuckerberg is not entirely optimistic. He noted, “Every time I hear talk about the dangers of AI, I reflect on the fact that technology itself is not inherently evil. Its consequences depend on how it’s used. Thus, the focus should be on how we develop, implement, and utilize it. Unfortunately, many people are now advocating for slowing down AI progress, which I find problematic.â€
Interestingly, as early as last year, Zuckerberg had expressed similar sentiments during an interview upon receiving the Axel Springer Award. He dismissed Musk's concerns about AI replacing humans, labeling them as irrational fears.
Musk isn’t the only tech leader worried about the rise of AI. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has also voiced his concerns about artificial intelligence.
Gates commented, “Initially, robots were created to assist with tasks and, when properly managed, proved beneficial to humanity. However, if they reach a highly intelligent stage in the distant future, we’ll need to address potential risks. Like Musk, I don’t understand why some people aren’t concerned about AI.â€
This ongoing debate highlights the contrasting views among tech leaders regarding the role and impact of AI on society.
