Beijing, November 6, 2015 , Texas Instruments (TI) has launched a product line that includes three brushed DC gate drivers. These drivers are the industry's first devices with integrated current sensing. With this integrated device, designers can avoid the associated power loss, heat, and expense associated with using external sense resistors. Compared to competing devices, the DRV8871 motor driver family helps reduce the design complexity, power consumption and board area of end devices such as multifunction printers, home appliances and industrial machines. The DRV8871 expands TI's portfolio of brushed DC motor drivers and is one of three new brushed DC drivers with integrated field effect transistors (FETs) designed primarily for space constraints. The DRV8870 features integrated regulation and limits current to an external current sense resistor. In addition, it provides fault monitoring to increase system reliability.

Main features and advantages

Reduced system complexity: When using the DRV8871 for design, it can reduce board area by up to 25% by eliminating the use of discrete sense resistors.

Optimized power consumption: These devices use standard low-cost, low-power resistors to set current thresholds, limiting startup and stalling inrush currents. The ability to limit current to a known level can greatly reduce system requirements and the large capacitance values needed to maintain a stable voltage, especially for motor starting and stalling.

Simplified design: Simplifies board layout with accurate current regulation by eliminating the need to sense routing traces when using the DRV8871.

Wide Supply Voltage: This device offers a wide motor supply voltage range of 6.5V to 45V to support industry standard power supplies of 12V and 24V.

Tools and technical support

The evaluation modules (EVM) of the DRV8870EVM, DRV8871EVM, and DRV8872EVM each demonstrate the capabilities and performance of a brushed DC motor drive. These EVMs also include the TPS7A16 low-dropout regulator (LDO) and the TLC555 low-power timer. Currently available at TI stores and authorized distributors.

Availability

The 8-pin DRV8871 family is currently available in a 4.9mm x 6.0mm thermally enhanced small package (HSOP). The DRV8871 series is the newest member of TI's motor drive portfolio. From universal and rotating motors to high-complexity industrial motors, TI offers the industry's most scalable motor solutions across a wide range of voltage, current, interface, integration and control options.
