He noted that their partnership with Jianghuai represents a critical step forward in autonomous driving production. High-precision maps are vital for navigation and safety in self-driving cars, serving as essential data for Baidu's Apollo cloud services. At Baidu's Shanghai R&D center, the media was given a detailed look at the standardized processes involved in creating high-precision maps. Media representatives were also invited to experience firsthand the field data collection using Baidu's specialized vehicles. According to Baidu's high-precision mapping team leader, these maps serve three primary roles in autonomous driving: acting as a "clairvoyant" to anticipate road conditions ahead, providing supplementary data when cameras or radar fail, and functioning as a "safety officer" by identifying obstacles and making preemptive decisions. Baidu's high-precision maps stand out due to their extreme detail, high automation, and extensive coverage. They can reconstruct nearly every object on real roads, precisely detailing features like traffic signs, lane lines, and guardrails, with a relative accuracy of 0.1 to 0.2 meters. This level of detail surpasses industry standards. In terms of efficiency, Baidu leverages AI technologies such as pattern recognition, deep learning, 3D reconstruction, and point cloud processing to automate 90% of the data processing. This allows them to automatically recognize hundreds of targets with over 95% accuracy. Coverage-wise, Baidu boasts the largest mapping fleet in China, equipped with fully autonomous software and hardware systems. They aim to cover all national highways and urban expressways this year. Additionally, their intelligent map platform supports minute-by-minute updates through multi-source data processing, cloud services, and data centers. Baidu began its high-precision mapping research in 2013 and now offers end-to-end solutions with complete intellectual property rights. Their ability to independently acquire and process data gives them a significant cost advantage, placing them at the forefront globally in terms of data accuracy, quality, and production capacity. As autonomous driving matures, mass production is becoming a critical challenge. Since its launch in April, the Apollo Autonomous Driving Platform has garnered support from over 50 global automotive leaders and suppliers.
