Valve-type surge arresters may experience various abnormalities and faults during operation. It's crucial for operators to identify these issues and take timely actions to resolve them. In normal weather conditions, if the arrester’s porcelain housing is cracked, it should be reported for scheduled power shutdown. If the arrester is out of service and a qualified replacement is not immediately available, but the issue does not pose an immediate threat to system safety, the crack can be sealed with paint or epoxy resin to prevent moisture ingress. The faulty arrester should then be replaced as soon as possible.

If cracks are discovered during thunderstorms and cause flashover, the system ground should not be disconnected if it's feasible to maintain grounding. In cases where unusual sounds are heard inside the arrester or the casing shows signs of cracking that result in system grounding, personnel should avoid approaching the device. The faulty arrester can be isolated using a switch or manual grounding. If the arrester suddenly explodes but doesn’t cause permanent grounding, the affected phase can be de-energized and replaced after the storm.

If the system becomes permanently grounded due to an explosion, it is strictly prohibited to use a knife switch to operate the damaged arrester. If the surge protector’s indicator turns black or shows burn marks, or if there are signs of burning at the grounding lead connection, internal issues such as valve resistance failure or deterioration in spark gap performance may be present. This could lead to increased power frequency current, so immediate electrical testing or disassembly inspection is necessary to ensure continued safe operation.

Regular maintenance and inspections are essential to detect early signs of failure and prevent serious incidents. Operators must remain vigilant and follow established procedures when handling any arrester-related issues to maintain the reliability and safety of the electrical system.
