"AI was a big topic at this year's CES. From your perspective, Harry (Shen Xiangyang), what do you think will be the key trends in technology for 2018?"

"Some of the points Fu Sheng just mentioned, I agree with many of them. A company moving forward always needs a clear worldview, and this must evolve over time."

"When people ask me where I think the world is heading, I believe Microsoft has been very clear about its direction in recent years. In one word, it’s 'Ambient Computing,' which essentially means 'ubiquitous computing' and 'ubiquitous intelligence.'"

"From the beginning of IT, computing has always been essential. Now, computing and intelligence are becoming more integrated across many fields, generating real value. Fu Sheng’s view is that, at a high level, progress is inevitable, but now more attention should be given to productization. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this."

"I think China has produced many great products over the years, like 360, Baidu Search, WeChat, and others. That’s because there are talented product managers. Innovation, in my view, involves three areas: technological innovation, product innovation, and business model innovation."

"As someone who has worked in tech, I tend to lean toward the importance of technological innovation. I believe that true disruptive innovation comes from the tech side. Without it, others can still create similar products. For example, quantum computers versus non-quantum ones—there’s a big difference."

"Zhang Peng: Technology solves the 0 to 1 problem. Fu Sheng emphasized the importance of the product level. At a certain stage, technological advancement creates space for product development. But at the same time, we can’t ignore the role of technology itself."

"Shen Xiangyang: Absolutely. Technology is the foundation, and all three types of innovation—technological, product, and business model—are crucial."

"I often hear leaders talk about AI as if they fully understand it. But when asked to explain or demonstrate an AI algorithm, many struggle. I’ve spoken in the U.S. recently about AI, and I noticed that everyone is worried about not talking about it, thinking they might be left behind. But in reality, few truly grasp what AI is."

"What is artificial intelligence?"

"Zhang Peng: You’re in charge of Microsoft’s entire AI division. Could you share Microsoft’s AI worldview?"

"Shen Xiangyang: Before I talk about Microsoft’s AI vision, let’s first understand why AI has become so popular lately. What exactly is artificial intelligence?"

"In short, AI is about learning human intelligence. It’s the intelligence that mirrors our own. People often wonder, why do humans have intelligence?"

"Most people believe that human intelligence has three levels. First is memory. For instance, a child who can recite poems at a young age shows strong memory, which is essentially data storage in a computer."

"The second level is calculation. This is when a child demonstrates smartness through math abilities. Recent advancements in computing power, such as those from Intel, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, have made this possible."

"The third level is learning ability. This is what makes people truly intelligent. However, even today, there are still challenges in solving complex problems using AI. Most current AI systems rely on big data to solve small problems, while true intelligence may require tackling big issues with limited data."

"For example, Peng seems very smart, but he doesn’t necessarily rely on big data. Instead, he observes, judges, and makes decisions based on his experiences. These kinds of capabilities aren’t easily replicated by deep learning or big data alone."

"Zhang Peng: So AI and human intelligence don’t follow the same path. Humans use small data to solve big problems."
