Shanghai World Expo Pudong Site Public Space Design Category

The public space design of the Pudong site of the Shanghai World Expo is a comprehensive and complex special project carried out under the conditions of many participating countries, many types of facilities and unstable boundaries.

Including Pudong's fenced area (2.39 square kilometers), more than 240 foreign national pavilions, all the square system, green space system, elevated system, supporting facilities system, night lighting, etc. in the exhibition area of the international organization, the most critical and typical is ABC III. The design of 11 group sites in the area, the total area of the plot is 842,000 square meters, of which the external space area is 506,000 square meters. The successful design and landing of the 11 group sites have typical model significance for the public space of the entire Expo site.

The design explores the challenges faced by the design of public spaces under urban events, as well as the spatial layout strategies, spatial atmosphere, night lighting design, humanized expression of response, and operational management coordination during the exhibition.

World Expo night view public space in the information age

In the information age, when people's access to information is no longer timely, people's attention to the Expo will gradually change from physical exhibits to the exchange space of the overall Expo Park. The external nightscape public space will be a large number of different races. People from countries with a cultural background provide a “global carnival” and a place for consumption.

Role positioning of the public space of the night scene of the Expo site

If the exhibition hall is a “map”, then the space of the venue is “bottom”. The public space of the night view of the Expo should implement a large number of supporting facilities in a reasonable and orderly manner, and at the same time meet the spatial function requirements such as outdoor display, performance, leisure, waiting and evacuation, and reduce passiveness. Waiting time, providing a humanized place, and finally creating a public space for the Expo night scene of happy communication, experience interaction and cultural diversity.

Night lighting design concept

The night illumination of the Expo Park focuses on “harmony and modern urban spirit”, and forms a multi-level and networked night landscape pattern in the combination of “point, line and surface” in the layout of night scene space. “One Axis and Four Pavilions” is the core of night lighting, and is the most prominent and conspicuous lighting area. The distribution of night illumination after the completion of the park will present a clear explicit-hidden relationship, and the relative “hidden” is the main feature of the nightscape design of the public space of the venue.

The excitement of the Expo night scene not only relies on the glorious “One Axis and Four Pavilions”, but also the positive setting and communication of the surrounding block lighting can also contribute to the visitors’ impression of the night tour. The design intention is to interpret the “Eco Expo” from the perspective of night lighting. The concept of “hidden” reflects the selection of high-efficiency and energy-saving light sources, reflecting the avoidance of the influence of animals and plants and the active control of astigmatism and glare pollution.

Night lighting design strategy

With the aim of humanized lighting, we will create a safe and comfortable urban lighting environment, fully reflecting the characteristics of the Expo;

Promote the application and demonstration of green lighting technology based on the principle of high efficiency and energy saving, and create an efficient and energy-saving night lighting system for the Expo site;

With innovation as the goal, it reflects the pioneering design thinking of lighting technology and light art, and gives novel, beautiful and orderly night vision.

Night lighting space architecture

According to different types of space, the public space of the Expo site forms a multi-level, networked night landscape pattern in the combination of “point, line and surface” in the layout of the night scene space.

Surface: The safety lighting in a large area of transition space in the site and the safety and eco-type lighting in the landscape green space are the overall base of the night scene of the site.

Line: Elevated platform lighting is the most important axis for lighting design; vertical and horizontal pass space lighting in the site will form the context of the campus lighting network.

Point: The stage lighting of the five continents theme square is the most beautiful focus of the whole venue under the night. The surrounding areas of the central square stage will also attract a large number of tourists to stop.
