Compared to the long-standing competition in the consumer market, this level of performance was truly commendable. Interestingly, Samsung expects this positive trend to continue into 2018. The company plans to further increase production of high-end LCD and flexible OLED screens, aiming to enhance profitability even more. For the mobile division, Samsung is focusing on differentiation through advanced technologies such as foldable OLED smartphones. Additionally, it will continue to build out the Bixby ecosystem and promote intelligent IC networking services powered by its 5G technology. Currently, Samsung holds a strong position in two major markets, though each presents different challenges. Flexible OLED screens are a key technology that all manufacturers rely on. For Samsung, while it continues to develop this technology, it also has to consider the maturity of the first-generation solutions. Similar to standard OLED panels, flexible OLEDs are expected to grow steadily rather than rapidly. However, the Bixby ecosystem tells a different story. Since its introduction, Bixby has faced criticism, with many users finding it underwhelming. As *The Verge* noted, Bixby felt like a step backward for Samsung. The addition of a dedicated Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 was met with skepticism, and early performance was far from impressive. Moreover, it remains unclear how Bixby is generating profits for Samsung. Unless these profits come from user data sales, it’s unlikely that Bixby will significantly boost hardware sales. Most consumers don’t buy smart home devices or appliances solely because they support Bixby. While AI assistants can offer value across platforms, the real benefit lies in locking users into an ecosystem. Companies like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft have already demonstrated how digital assistants can drive loyalty and usage. Another point worth noting is Samsung’s dominant position in the DRAM market. While companies like SK Hynix and Magna also play a role, Samsung stands out in terms of profitability. With Qualcomm shifting some of its orders to TSMC, the DRAM shortage became more pronounced. Despite potential challenges in 2018, Samsung had a very profitable year in 2017.
