Tokyo, Japan, August 7, 2017 – Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a global leader in semiconductor solutions, announced the start of mass production for its first automotive-grade Linux (AGL) software-based System on Chip (SoC). This milestone marks a significant step forward in the development of connected car technology. AGL is an open-source initiative that brings together industry players to build a fully open software stack for modern vehicles.

Renesas believes that AGL plays a crucial role in expanding the pool of in-vehicle software developers. With the R-Car Starter Kit and AGL software, the company is helping Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) accelerate the development of in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, making it easier to launch connected cars more efficiently. As a Platinum member of the AGL project, Renesas is collaborating with major OEMs like Toyota to promote the adoption of open-source software across the automotive industry.

The company's first R-Car series SoC, powered by AGL platform software, has already been deployed in the 2018 Toyota Camry. The model was launched in the U.S. this summer, marking the first time Toyota has used automotive-grade Linux in its infotainment system. This collaboration between Toyota and Renesas highlights the growing importance of open-source platforms in shaping the future of automotive technology.

"Toyota and Renesas have been involved in the AGL project from the very beginning," said Mr. Murata, Toyota’s Minister of Internet Strategy and Planning. "We have worked closely with Renesas and the AGL community to integrate the R-Car Series SoC into the 2018 Camry’s IVI system. This partnership has helped us move forward quickly in developing the system. Looking ahead, we believe that open standards will continue to drive innovation in IVI systems."

"Renesas has been a strong advocate for automotive-grade Linux, the Linux Foundation, and open-source development," said Dan Cauchy, Executive Director of Automotive Grade Linux at the Linux Foundation. "It’s encouraging to see real-world products now using AGL software, and I’m confident that AGL will gain even more traction in the coming years."

Renesas remains committed to advancing open-source initiatives such as the AGL platform and continues to work with its partners to lead the evolution of automotive information systems in the era of connected vehicles. Through ongoing collaboration, the company aims to support a more open, flexible, and innovative ecosystem for the automotive industry.
