In 2017, the renowned market research firm IDC released its annual report on the global wearable device market. The findings highlighted Apple’s continued dominance in the smart wear industry, with the Apple Watch maintaining its position as the top-selling product. Meanwhile, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi secured the second spot, showcasing its growing influence in the global market.
According to IDC’s data, during the fourth quarter of 2017, Apple shipped approximately 8 million units of the Apple Watch, capturing the leading position in the smart wearable segment. Fitbit came in second with around 5.4 million units shipped. Looking at the full-year figures, Apple sold a total of 17.7 million Apple Watches, still securing the top position. Xiaomi, on the other hand, managed to ship 15.7 million units of its Mi Band series, placing it in second place. While Apple saw an impressive growth rate of 55.9% in 2017, Xiaomi experienced a slight decline in shipments, with a decrease of 0.3%.
The drop in Xiaomi’s shipment numbers may be attributed to delays in launching new products. The first and second generations of the Mi Band have struggled to maintain consumer interest, and without innovative updates, the brand risks losing momentum. To stay competitive, Xiaomi needs to introduce new wearable devices that can replace the older models and re-engage its user base.
As the smart wearable market continues to evolve, both Apple and Xiaomi are expected to play key roles in shaping the future of this fast-growing industry. With advancements in technology and increasing demand for health and fitness tracking, the competition is likely to intensify in the coming years.
