Samsung recently filed a new design patent that reveals an innovative foldable smartphone. Unlike traditional flip phones, this device features screens on both the upper and lower parts of the fold, making it a completely new concept in curved screen and hinge technology. The design is quite advanced, with a full-screen display that can bend inward using a mechanical hinge system, which bears a strong resemblance to the hinge mechanism found in Microsoft’s Surface Book.
This development shows that Samsung is seriously pushing the boundaries of mobile phone design. While the company has been working on mass-producing foldable screen devices for some time, there have been challenges related to durability and manufacturing processes. Despite these hurdles, it's speculated that Samsung may launch its first foldable phone this year under the Galaxy X lineup.
According to reports, the Galaxy X is part of Samsung’s broader plan to expand its flagship series. Once launched, it will join the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines, forming a three-tiered product lineup. The new model is expected to be named "Galaxy X" and could be released as early as 2019.
Beyond Samsung, other major manufacturers such as Sony, LG, and ZTE are also exploring foldable screen designs.
